The Australian government has introduced new biometric requirements for certain people applying for Australian visas from India. The new rules came into effect on October 26, 2026. Under these rules, some applicants may be asked to provide their fingerprints and a facial image as part of the visa application process. The Australian government says the move aims to improve security, prevent identity fraud and make it easier to verify applicants’ identities. The new requirements apply to visa applications submitted on or after October 26, 2026. Applications submitted before this date and visas that have already been granted will not be affected by the change. Not every applicant will automatically need to provide biometric information. Australia’s Department of Home Affairs will notify applicants if they need to complete this additional step and explain how to do it.Depending on their eligibility, applicants may be asked to visit one of 16 Australian biometric collection centres across India, operated by VFS Global. Some applicants may also be eligible to submit their biometric information through the Australian Immi App instead of visiting a centre.
The new rules are important for Indians planning to travel to Australia for tourism, higher education, employment or family visits. Applicants should regularly check their emails and follow instructions from the Australian Department of Home Affairs. They should wait for an official notification before booking a biometric appointment or using the mobile application. The Australian government has said that visa processing times are not expected to be affected if applicants provide their biometric information promptly after receiving instructions. It has also stated that personal information will be handled under applicable laws and protected through security measures.Indian applicants should use official government channels for visa-related information and avoid paying unnecessary fees to agents who promise faster processing or guaranteed visa approval. Providing fingerprints and a facial image does not guarantee that a visa will be approved, as all applications remain subject to the relevant eligibility requirements.
