The Indian Election Commission has announced that the election to select the next Vice President of India will take place on September 9, 2025. On July 21, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the Vice Presidency due to health reasons. Following this, the Election Commission released a new election schedule, adhering to the constitutional requirement of a 60-day period to conduct the election. According to this schedule, the election is set for September 9. Candidates for the Vice Presidential election may begin submitting their nomination papers starting from the 7th of the month. The Last date for submitting nominations is August 21, 2025. The last date to withdraw nominations is August 23, 2025. Election date: September 9, 2025. It has been announced that the number of votes and the results will be declared on the same day. In the vice-presidential election, the elected members of the Rajya Sabha, the members of the Rajya Sabha appointed by the President, and the members of the Lok Sabha will participate in selecting the Vice President. Meanwhile, due to the ruling coalition having a majority, the BJP’s candidate for Vice President is likely to win. There are 542 members in the Lok Sabha and 240 members in the Rajya Sabha who are eligible to vote. In both houses, the BJP coalition comprises 427 members. The opposition parties have 355 members. In the Lok Sabha, the BJP coalition has 293 members, while in the Rajya Sabha, there are 134 members. The opposition coalition has 249 members in the Lok Sabha and 106 members in the Rajya Sabha. With a majority requiring 392 votes, the BJP coalition has the support of 427 members.
