The US Department of Homeland Security has introduced major changes to F-1 visa rules for international students. The new rules are expected to come into effect from September 15.Under the new system, the existing “Duration of Status” (D/S) system will be replaced with a fixed period of stay. International students may be allowed to stay in the US for a maximum of four years to complete their studies.Students pursuing a PhD, STEM courses, or other higher education programs that take more than four years may have to apply separately for permission to extend their stay.After completing their studies, students will reportedly have only 30 days to find a job or leave the United States and return to their home country.The changes could have a major impact on international students, including a large number of Indian students. In view of the upcoming changes, several universities have advised international students to complete their travel plans and enter the US before the new rules come into effect.
