Iran has warned that it could launch missile attacks against European countries that support US military operations if US President Donald Trump further escalates the ongoing war, according to a report by the Financial Times.
Two senior officials close to the Iranian government said Iranian forces are currently considering possible targets in Europe. One of the targets reportedly under consideration is Bulgaria’s Besmer air base, which recently allowed US aircraft to refuel. Iran is also reportedly considering targeting a British military air base in Cyprus. Iranian forces are also studying the possibility of cutting undersea communication cables in the Strait of Hormuz if the conflict becomes more serious. Talks over the Strait of Hormuz have reportedly stalled.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has recently appointed hardline figures to key positions related to the country’s security and military affairs.
The Iranian officials warned that if the US attacks Iran’s infrastructure, Iran could expand its military response beyond the Middle East and target locations in Europe as well. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has already warned that any military base used to launch attacks on Iranian territory would be considered a legitimate target for retaliation.
