India observed a significant milestone today, November 26, 2024, as it celebrated the 75th anniversary of the adoption of its Constitution. The Indian Constituent Assembly officially adopted the Constitution on November 26, 1949, which subsequently came into force on January 26, 1950, thereby establishing India as a sovereign and democratic republic. In 2015, the Government of India designated November 26 as Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas) to pay tribute to this pivotal event in 1949. Since that time, the nation has commemorated the adoption of the Constitution annually on this date. The year-long celebrations marking this 75th anniversary will focus on four key themes: the Preamble of the Constitution, understanding the Constitution, the process of its creation, and celebrating its significance. The principal event for these commemorative activities took place today in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan. The celebration was attended by the President of India, along with the Vice President, Prime Minister, Speaker, various Ministers, Members of Parliament, and other distinguished guests, all gathered to honor Constitution Day 2024 in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan.
The event began with the National Anthem, followed by an address from the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, who praised the vision of the Constitution’s architects, especially Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, for their commitment to protecting citizens’ fundamental rights. A short film then celebrated the Indian Constitution, highlighting its creation and key contributors like Dr. Ambedkar, while reflecting on its historical evolution and significance over the past 75 years. In his Constitution Day address, the Vice-President of India emphasized the Constitution’s vital role in shaping India’s democratic identity.
