Security has been tightened across Delhi ahead of a protest scheduled for October 10 at Jantar Mantar. The protest has been called by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and the All India Students’ Association (AISA). Delhi Police have also introduced restrictions on public transport to prevent possible disruptions. The protest is being organised to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The organisers have accused him of failing to address concerns related to the electoral process. The protest is also expected to receive support from the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, a farmers’ organisation, and opposition groups. In July, CJP held a protest at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over allegations of a question paper leak. The latest protest is expected to draw attention to concerns about the conduct of elections and the functioning of election authorities. However, Delhi Police have not granted permission for the October 10 protest and have prohibited demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. Officials have warned that action may be taken against anyone who attempts to violate the restrictions.
According to reports, around 23,000 security personnel from 221 units of the Central Armed Police Forces are being deployed across the city. They will work alongside Delhi Police to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents.Authorities have also reportedly set up 10 temporary detention centres to accommodate people detained while attempting to reach the protest site. Security personnel are expected to monitor key roads and other sensitive locations to prevent large crowds from gathering.Additional restrictions may also affect public transport. Reports suggest that authorities have issued instructions to regulate train services and app-based taxi services such as Ola and Uber. These measures are intended to prevent protesters from entering Delhi from neighbouring areas and to maintain normalcy in the city. With several groups expected to support the demonstration, Delhi remains on alert. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have strengthened security arrangements to prevent clashes and traffic disruptions.
