US President Donald Trump has said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unhappy with the recent increase in US tariffs on Indian goods. The United States imposed an additional 50 percent tax on Indian products, opposing India’s purchase of crude oil from Russia. Of this, 25 percent is described as a reciprocal tariff, while the remaining 25 percent is treated as a penalty. The move has affected several key Indian export sectors, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, and jewellery. Delay in Import of 68 Helicopters: Trump Reveals Modi’s Anger Over New Tax Policy Speaking at a Republican Party meeting in Washington, Trump said that the new tariff decision had upset Prime Minister Modi, but added that they still share a good personal relationship. He claimed the US believed India’s oil purchases were helping fund the Russia–Ukraine war, and said US pressure had led India to significantly reduce oil imports from Russia. Trump also mentioned defence ties, saying Modi had raised concerns about a five-year delay in the delivery of 68 Apache helicopters, and that he had ordered officials to resolve the issue quickly. Meanwhile, India’s External Affairs Ministry strongly objected to the tariffs, stating that buying Russian oil is necessary to protect the welfare and energy security of its 1.4 billion people, and called the US action unfair and unjustified.
