Russia’s attacks have damaged Ukraine’s communication infrastructure. Because of this, the Ukrainian military is using Starlink, a high-speed satellite internet service provided by businessman Elon Musk, to maintain communication on the battlefield. Russia has repeatedly warned that it may attack commercial communication satellites used by Ukraine. Recently, Russian officials said that S-500 missiles are ready to strike satellites in low Earth orbit. In 2021, Russia had already tested an anti-satellite missile by destroying one of its own inactive satellites in space. Now, NATO intelligence agencies suspect that Russia is planning a new type of weapon to target Starlink satellites. According to these reports, Russia may use sharp metal fragments, similar to those used in explosives, as weapons. These metal pieces would be carried by small satellites and released into orbit about 550 kilometers above the Earth. Once released, these sharp metal fragments would collide with Starlink satellites and damage them. The satellites’ solar panels could be easily destroyed by such impacts. This type of weapon would not only affect Starlink but could also harm satellites belonging to other countries. There is also a serious risk to major space stations. The International Space Station and China’s Tiangong space station, which orbit in the same region, could be damaged if such debris spreads in low Earth orbit
