India is planning to buy the battle-proven Javelin anti-tank missile system, according to U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. He shared the information in a post on X, saying that India is planning to acquire the Javelin system, which has already demonstrated its effectiveness on the battlefield. Sergio Gor said the proposed purchase would be an important development in the growing U.S.-India defence relationship. He also pointed to discussions during the Shangri-La Dialogue in May 2026, where the U.S. Defence Secretary had highlighted the growing defence cooperation between the two countries. According to him, the deal could also create opportunities for joint production and further strengthen defence cooperation between India and the United States.
The FGM-148 Javelin is a modern, man-portable anti-tank missile system designed to destroy heavily armoured vehicles and tanks. It is jointly produced by Lockheed Martin and RTX. One of its key features is its ability to attack a tank from above. Since the upper part of many armoured vehicles is relatively less protected, the Javelin missile can rise after launch and strike the target from the top, making it an effective weapon against armoured threats. The planned acquisition is being seen as another significant step in the expanding defence partnership between India and the United States.
