Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that the NATO alliance could break apart if the United States tries to take control of Greenland. Greenland is a self-governing territory under Denmark and is the largest island in the world. Recently, former US President Donald Trump said Greenland could be joined with the United States for security reasons, which created strong reactions in Europe. Speaking on the issue, Prime Minister Frederiksen said NATO was formed after World War II and includes both the United States and Denmark as member countries. Under NATO rules, member nations must not act against each other, and an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. She said any attempt by the US to take Greenland would violate NATO agreements and would not be accepted. Frederiksen added that Greenland cannot be compared to countries like Venezuela and warned that if the US were to seize Greenland, it would seriously damage and possibly break the NATO alliance.
