Germany has implemented stricter regulations regarding its citizenship law in response to the rising incidents of antisemitism and racism within the nation. According to a report by Anadolu Agency, individuals who share, like, or comment on the phrase “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” on social media platforms will be ineligible for German citizenship. This slogan is often linked to pro-Palestinian sentiments. North German Radio and Television (NDR) further elaborated that engagement with this slogan on social media will result in disqualification from the citizenship process. The new guidelines established by the German Interior Ministry clearly indicate that any association with this phrase will hinder an individual’s chances of obtaining German citizenship.

Germany has enacted a more stringent citizenship law in response to the rising tide of antisemitism and racism within the nation. The revised legislation allows foreign nationals working in Germany to apply for citizenship after a reduced period of five years, down from the previous eight years, thereby streamlining the naturalisation process. A notable provision within the law stipulates that individuals who breach the commitment to uphold democratic values and acknowledge historical responsibilities towards Jewish life—such as Holocaust denial or inciting violence against Israel—will be disqualified from obtaining citizenship. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized this stance, stating, “If you don’t share our values, you can’t get a German passport. We have drawn a crystal clear red line here.”

The expression “from the river to the sea” can be interpreted as a call for the elimination of Israel. According to the Anti-Defamation League, the slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” is characterized as “antisemitic” and represents a demand for a Palestinian state that would encompass the territory from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, which includes the State of Israel. This would effectively entail the dismantling of the Jewish state. The organization further asserts that this accusation undermines the Jewish people’s right to self-determination, particularly through the potential expulsion of Jews from their historical homeland. Additionally, the use of this slogan can contribute to feelings of insecurity and alienation among members of the Jewish and pro-Israel communities.
