Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) presents symptoms that closely resemble those of influenza or the common cold. The virus can be transmitted from an infected person to others via coughing, sneezing, or direct personal contact. Recently, amidst a surge in cases in China, three instances of HMPV have been identified in Bengaluru, India. The initial cases involved an eight-month-old infant who is currently recovering in the hospital and a three-month-old who has since been discharged. Additionally, a two-month-old infant in Ahmedabad has also tested positive for the virus. Presently, China is experiencing an outbreak of HMPV, with social media reports indicating the circulation of multiple viruses, including influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19.

Various posts and videos suggest that hospitals are becoming overwhelmed with patients suffering from respiratory illnesses. First identified in 2001, HMPV is a respiratory infection that leads to flu-like symptoms and can affect individuals across all age groups. However, young children under five years of age, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable. Common symptoms associated with HMPV include cough, fever, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, and sore throat, typically manifesting three to six days following exposure to the virus. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary due to the intensity of the illness. HMPV is transmitted through direct contact with an infected individual. The virus can spread by touching contaminated surfaces, as well as through actions such as coughing, sneezing, and shaking hands.
