The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to make history in December 2025 by launching its first humanoid robot, Vyommitra, into space. This will be a major step forward for India’s space program. Vyommitra, which means “friend in space”, is a semi-humanoid robot created to test spacecraft systems before sending real astronauts. The robot is set to play an essential part in evaluating spacecraft systems and environments prior to the deployment of manned crews into the unknown. It serves as an intelligent, human-like companion for astronauts, undertaking both mechanical and communication tasks aboard India’s crewed spacecraft. It will help ensure everything is safe and works properly. The robot can operate control panels, monitor cabin conditions, and talk with ground stations. It is equipped with sensors, voice recognition, and smart decision-making systems. This mission is part of ISRO’s Gaganyaan project, which aims to send Indian astronauts into low-Earth orbit for the first time.
