Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Russia from October 22 to 23 at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit taking place in Kazan. As stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), this summit is being conducted under Russia’s chairmanship. During his time in Kazan, PM Modi is anticipated to engage in bilateral discussions with leaders from other BRICS nations as well as invited dignitaries. The MEA highlighted that the summit, which carries the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” will serve as a significant forum for leaders to deliberate on pressing global challenges. Additionally, it noted that the summit will present a crucial opportunity to evaluate the advancements of initiatives initiated by BRICS and to explore potential avenues for future cooperation. The BRIC nations, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China, convened for their inaugural meeting in St. Petersburg in 2006, culminating in the first official BRIC summit in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009 after a series of high-level discussions. The BRIC group was officially renamed BRICS, which stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, following South Africa’s acceptance as a full member during the BRIC Foreign Ministers’ meeting held in New York in September 2010.

BRICS represents a significant coalition of major emerging economies, accounting for 41 percent of the global population, 24 percent of the world’s GDP, and over 16 percent of international trade. Recently, in September, Russian President Vladimir Putin extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi for a bilateral meeting scheduled for October 22, coinciding with the BRICS Summit in Kazan. During this invitation, Putin referred to Modi as a “good friend.” These comments were made during a meeting between Putin and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, which took place at the Constantine Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia, on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers’ meeting. This will mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second trip to Russia in 2024, following his journey to Moscow in July for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit. During this visit, he engaged in a bilateral discussion with President Putin of Russia. Additionally, Prime Minister Modi was honored with Russia’s most prestigious civilian distinction, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, during a ceremony at the Kremlin in Moscow.
