On August 5 of the previous year, in response to violent student protests that erupted in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position and sought refuge in India. Following this development, the parliament of Bangladesh was dissolved, and Muhammad Yunus assumed the role of interim leader under military oversight. There is a prevailing situation suggesting that general elections in Bangladesh may be held either at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2026.The interim government has definitively stated that Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party will not be allowed to participate in the upcoming general elections in Bangladesh.
In this context, the student wing of the Awami League, known as Chhatra League, which has been suspended, had arranged for Sheikh Hasina to deliver a speech online. It was announced that she would address the public last night, and there are reports suggesting that she would call upon the citizens to register their protests against the current administration.Following the news that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would address the nation online, a group of protesters vandalized and set fire to the Mujibur Rahman Memorial House in Dhaka, named after Sheikh Hasina’s father. Several protesters ascended to the second floor of the house, using ladders and wooden materials to damage the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
