Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, has passed away, as confirmed by a statement from the group on Wednesday. He was 86 years old. Ratan Tata, who led the conglomerate for over two decades in his role as chairman, had been receiving intensive medical care at a hospital in Mumbai since Monday. N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, expressed deep sorrow in a late-night statement, saying, “It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation.” On Monday, the industrialist had addressed health speculations through a social media post, clarifying that he was undergoing routine medical examinations due to his age. Ratan Naval Tata was born on December 28, 1937, and is recognized as an influential industrialist, philanthropist, and the former chairman of Tata Sons. He served as the chairman of the Tata Group from 1990 until 2012, and briefly held the position of interim chairman from October 2016 to February 2017. In addition to his corporate roles, he has remained actively involved in overseeing the group’s charitable trusts. His contributions to society were acknowledged in 2008 when he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honor, following the Padma Bhushan, which he received in 2000. Ratan Tata assumed leadership of the Tata Group in 1991, succeeding JRD Tata, and continued in this role until December 2012. Since then, he has held the title of chairman emeritus of the expansive Tata Group, which boasts a valuation of nearly USD 130 billion. During his 22 years at the helm, the group experienced remarkable growth, characterized by a series of strategic acquisitions on a global scale.
