The Supreme Court has questioned why the ban imposed in Delhi on firecrackers should not be extended to the entire country. Arjun Gopal and others filed public interest litigation in the Supreme Court, demanding that ‘the use of chemicals like barium nitrate in the manufacture of firecrackers is harmful to health and the environment. Therefore, they should be banned.’ After hearing these petitions, the Supreme Court ordered that only green firecrackers should be manufactured. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court, hearing another petition filed by Arjun Gopal seeking a ban on bursting firecrackers, imposed a ban on the sale and bursting of firecrackers in Delhi in 2024. As the livelihood of lakhs of people who depend on the firecracker industry has been affected, a bench headed by Chief Justice P.R. Kawai heard the petition filed by firecracker manufacturing companies seeking to lift this ban yesterday. It should not be limited to just Delhi, where the affluent reside. Is it not the right of the citizens in other parts of the country to breathe clean air, just like those in Delhi? Following this, the judges have mandated that the central government should provide a response to the petition requesting the lifting of the prohibition on the sale and detonation of firecrackers in Delhi. Furthermore, a report on the status of green firecracker production is required to be filed. Thus, the judges have given their orders.
