Following recent shooting incidents at Brown University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US President Donald Trump has ordered an immediate suspension of the Green Card lottery program. At Brown University, a gunman opened fire on campus, killing two students and injuring nine others. In a separate incident, MIT professor Nuno Gomes Loureiro was shot dead by an unknown attacker near his home. Police are still investigating who was responsible for the MIT killing. Investigators later identified the Brown University shooter as Neves Valente, a native of Portugal and a former student at the university. Reports say Valente had earlier studied with Professor Loureiro at a university in Portugal. It was also found that Valente had received US residency through the Green Card lottery program in 2017. Following these findings, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that President Trump ordered the Green Card program to be stopped with immediate effect.
