US President Donald Trump said the United States is “very close” to signing a new trade deal with India. He made the statement during the swearing-in of Sergio Gor, the new US ambassador to India. “We are working on a deal with India — a fair trade deal that’s better than before. We’re almost there,” Trump said. He praised his good relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and called India one of America’s most important international partners. Trump described India as “a big deal,” one of the world’s oldest civilizations, and the largest country in the world. “I’m trusting Sergio to strengthen our strategic partnership with India,” Trump said, adding that he has a “fantastic relationship with Prime Minister Modi.”

Trump also called India an “amazing country” with a fast-growing middle class and said it’s an important economic and security partner in the Indo-Pacific region. Vice President JD Vance administered the oath to Gor in the Oval Office. Top officials like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent attended the ceremony. Vance congratulated Gor and said that both he and Trump “love” India. “You’ll be a great ambassador to a country we deeply respect,” he said. Gor thanked Trump for his trust and promised to strengthen ties between the two countries. “It’s an incredible honor, and I look forward to enhancing our partnership,” he said. Sergio Gor, 38, is the youngest US ambassador to India. A close aide of Trump, he previously led the White House Presidential Personnel Office, overseeing appointments for over 4,000 positions in the new administration.
