The US Senate has approved a new bill that could allow President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that import large quantities of crude oil and natural gas from Russia. India and China are among the countries that could be affected by the proposed measure. The bill comes as the Russia-Ukraine war continues into its fifth year. The United States is seeking to increase pressure on Russia and strengthen sanctions over its military actions in Ukraine. The legislation was named in memory of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a strong supporter of Ukraine who died on July 11.The bill received strong support in the US Senate, with 86 senators voting in favour and 11 voting against it. The measure is aimed at supporting Ukraine and putting additional pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war.Under the proposed legislation, President Trump would have the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the five leading countries that import large amounts of Russian crude oil and natural gas. The countries named are India, China, Azerbaijan, Hungary and Slovakia.However, countries that import less than 15% of their natural gas needs from Russia and are taking steps to reduce those imports could receive an exemption.
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal welcomed the Senate’s decision and said the move sends a strong message of support to the people of Ukraine. He also warned Russia that Ukraine cannot be taken over through military action.The bill also proposes additional sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin, senior political and military officials, financial institutions and energy projects. Restrictions could also be expanded against older oil tanker ships that Russia allegedly uses to maintain its energy revenues.At the same time, the White House would have the authority to grant exemptions from certain sanctions if it is considered necessary in the national interest.The bill will now be sent to the US House of Representatives for further approval when it meets on the 31st. The legislation also proposes extending the 1996 Iran sanctions law until 2031.If the bill becomes law, it could have a major impact on countries such as India and China that continue to import significant amounts of Russian oil and natural gas.
