Major landslides happened early on Tuesday in Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district, possibly trapping hundreds of people.

Fireforce and NDRF personnel have been sent by the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), and an additional NDRF team is en route to Wayanad.

Massive landslide that struck hilly areas claimed the lives of at least nineteen persons. There are reportedly hundreds trapped in the landslide.

It has been confirmed by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan that every government agency is taking part in the search and rescue activities .

The operation will be coordinated and that state ministers would be heading towards the spot to oversee the rescue efforts.

Teams from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) have been rushed to the affected region, including firefighters and NDRF members.

A second NDRF team is currently en route to Wayanad. According to the information from KSDMA, two teams from the Kannur Defence Security force have also been sent to help in the rescue operations.

Locals say that a lot of people are still afraid to be stuck and that the continuous, intense rain is making rescue efforts more difficult.

The Health Department’s National Health Mission had established a control room in response to the landslides and other rain-related disasters that had occurred in the Wayanad district.
