The U.S. Embassy in India has released a strong advisory warning that foreign nationals who engage in crimes like assault, theft, or burglary in the United States may face visa revocation—and could be prohibited from entering the country in the future. This alert comes after a widely reported incident involving an Indian woman who was reportedly caught shoplifting items worth $1,300 from a Target store on May 1. The woman spent more than seven hours in the store gathering items before trying to leave without paying. The situation gained significant attention after a video of her confrontation with a Target employee went viral. While not directly referencing the case, the embassy highlighted the legal repercussions of criminal actions while in the U.S.“Engaging in assault, theft, or burglary in the United States will not only create legal problems for you—it could result in your visa being revoked and make you ineligible for future U.S. visas,” the embassy stated in a message shared on social media. “The United States prioritizes law and order and expects foreign visitors to adhere to all U.S. laws.” This advisory acts as a clear warning to both potential and current visa holders to abide by U.S. laws during their visit, as violations can lead to serious immigration repercussions. Legal experts point out that even minor offenses can prompt visa reviews or cancellations, particularly if they involve crimes of moral turpitude, which are taken seriously under U.S. immigration law.
