A severe earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck eastern Afghanistan last Sunday night. This earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 8 kilometers near Jalalabad, has severely affected the Kunar province. Many houses here have been constructed using earth and rocks, which caused them to collapse as they could not withstand the tremors. Residents in the affected areas are currently engaged in recovery efforts with the assistance of rescue teams. In this situation, the number of fatalities in the Kunar province has reached 1,411, while in the Nangarhar province, it stands at 12, totaling 1,423. The number of injured individuals across both provinces has risen to approximately 3,500. The chairman of the Disaster Management Authority in Kunar province stated, “We are rescuing the injured from remote villages and transporting them to hospitals. Due to the damage to the roads, we are unable to reach some villages that have been severely affected.”
