India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024 commenced today, October 15, marking the eighth iteration of this annual technology event, which was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the event, Modi also launched the World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (WTSA) 2024, organized by the International Telecommunication Union, a specialized agency of the United Nations. The Prime Minister stated, “India has democratized digital technology,” emphasizing that telecommunications in India transcends mere connectivity; it serves as a vehicle for promoting equity and opportunity. Reflecting on the Digital India initiative introduced a decade ago, he noted the importance of a holistic strategy, which identified four fundamental pillars: lowering device costs, ensuring nationwide digital connectivity, making data readily accessible, and adopting a ‘digital-first’ approach as a guiding principle.Modi further articulated that WTSA is dedicated to achieving global empowerment through consensus, while the India Mobile Congress seeks to enhance empowerment via improved connectivity. He underscored the significant relationship between consensus and connectivity, particularly in a world increasingly characterized by conflict, where both elements are essential.

In the past ten years, India has installed optical fibers that collectively stretch a distance equivalent to eight times that between the Earth and the Moon. During the India Mobile Congress held two years ago, the nation unveiled its 5G capabilities, and currently, every district across the country enjoys 5G connectivity. India has firmly positioned itself as a significant player in the 5G market and is now rapidly advancing towards the development of 6G technology, as noted by Modi.At the inaugural event, Jyotiraditya Scindia also spoke to the audience, emphasizing India’s commitment to global leadership in 6G technology. He stated, “While we are in step with the world in 5G, we aim to take the lead in 6G.” Scindia highlighted that 5G is projected to contribute an impressive 450 billion dollars to the Indian economy by 2040. In just 22 months, the rollout of 5G has reached all 36 states and Union Territories, covering 98 percent of districts and 80 percent of the population. The IMC 2024, a four-day event, will conclude on October 18 and will be held at Pragati Maidan, featuring participation from major industry players such as Xiaomi, Qualcomm, Reliance Jio, and Ericsson, along with the showcasing of the popular Meta RayBan XR glasses.
