A group of 93 retired civil servants has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena and Delhi Police Commissioner S.P.K. Singh, seeking an independent inquiry into the alleged police attack on students in Delhi.The students had organised a march called ‘Sansad Chalo’ on the 20th, demanding action over alleged NEET exam irregularities and calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.The retired officials, including former Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, former Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa, former Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon and former Punjab DGP Julio Ribeiro, alleged that police and Rapid Action Force personnel used excessive force against the protesting students.According to the letter, several students, including a 15-year-old boy, were seriously injured and admitted to hospital. The officials also alleged that a student required surgery to remove pellets that had hit the eye and neck area.The retired officials said the students were protesting peacefully over their future and alleged examination irregularities. They demanded a judicial inquiry led by a retired judge and called for departmental action against officials found responsible for any wrongdoing.
