India Road Accidents Claim 1.83 Lakh Lives: Shocking Road Safety Report Tabled in Parliament

India recorded 5,13,563 road accidents in 2025, resulting in the deaths of 1,83,382 people, the Central Government informed Parliament. Compared with 1,77,175 deaths in 2024, road accident fatalities increased by 3.5% in 2025. The total number of road accidents also rose by 5.3%.According to government data, an average of 59 road accidents occur every hour in India, with around 21 people losing their lives every hour. On average, 502 people die in road accidents every day.Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of road accident deaths in the country, followed by Tamil Nadu. In Uttar Pradesh, 27,550 people died in road accidents in 2025, up from 24,118 deaths in 2024.Tamil Nadu recorded 18,505 road accident deaths in 2025. The state also reported the highest number of road accidents in India, with 71,387 accidents recorded during the year.Punjab recorded the lowest number of road accident deaths among the states mentioned, with 3,062 fatalities. The number fell significantly from 4,759 deaths in 2024. Road accident deaths also increased in Bihar, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. However, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Telangana, and Delhi reported a decline in the number of road accident fatalities.
