Russia has expressed its full support for giving India a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. Speaking at the UN General Assembly meeting in New York, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that reforms to the Security Council should focus on increasing representation from regions of the Global South, including Asia, Africa and Latin America. He said Russia supports the demands of India and Brazil for permanent membership, while opposing the idea of giving additional permanent seats to Western countries such as Germany and Japan. Apart from Russia, several other countries have also voiced support for India’s permanent membership. Mauritius Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful and Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro have also called for India to be given a permanent seat, pointing to the country’s constructive role in global affairs.
