The Axiom 4 launch, a commercial human spaceflight mission involving Axiom Space, NASA, and SpaceX, has made history in numerous ways. This event marks a significant milestone for India, Poland, and Hungary, as they have sent astronauts into space for the first time in nearly fifty years, and it holds symbolic importance for both Europe and Asia. As of this report, the four astronauts aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule are orbiting the Earth, accelerating to synchronize with the International Space Station, which is their destination for the upcoming 15 days.As they circle the ‘Pale Blue Dot’ nearly 16 times each day, India’s Shubhanshu Shukla, Poland’s Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski, and Hungary’s Tibor Kapu witness a world that is profoundly different from the one encountered by the last explorers from their nations who ventured into space. However, this mission, particularly for India, is not merely a singular event. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) views the Axiom 4 mission as a crucial stepping stone towards its inaugural crewed mission, scheduled for 2027 under the Gaganyaan programme, which translates to ‘sky craft.’ Additionally, India has plans to establish its own space station within the next decade. The astronauts are set to dock with the International Space Station on Thursday, around 1100 hrs GMT (1630 hrs IST). They will remain attached for a duration of two weeks before returning to planet Earth. Commending this achievement, mission commander Peggy Whitson, who is at the helm of the crew, remarked, “It reflects the elegance with which we navigate through space against the backdrop of Earth.” She further stated, “It speaks to the refinement of our mission, the harmony of science and spirit, and the unmerited favor we carry with humility.” SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which successfully deployed the Crew Dragon capsule into low Earth orbit, made its return to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida just 8 minutes later. The launch occurred at 2:31 am local time (0631 hrs GMT, 1201 hrs IST).
