A special disaster training centre has been opened in Hangzhou, China, to help people learn how to survive natural disasters such as storms, cyclones and floods.The centre creates realistic disaster-like conditions, including artificial storm winds blowing at speeds of up to 165 kmph and powerful waves. People are given practical training on how to stay safe and escape during dangerous situations.The training centre has already helped more than 160,000 people. As climate change is increasing the risk of extreme weather events, such training is becoming more important.During the sessions, participants experience situations similar to being caught in a cyclone or sudden flood. They are provided with safety equipment, including wetsuits and helmets, while trained instructors guide them throughout the exercises.According to the centre’s management, it is the world’s first facility to offer this type of realistic cyclone survival training. Participants can experience strong winds of up to 103 miles per hour, along with heavy rain, to better understand how to respond during a real disaster.
