The number of Indian students obtaining U.S. visas saw a significant decline in August, leading to an overall decrease of 19 percent in student visas following the new restrictions imposed by President Donald Trump, as reported by the International Trade Commission on October 6. India, which had surpassed China last year as the primary source of international students in the United States, experienced the most drastic drop — an astonishing 44.5 percent fewer student visas compared to August 2024. During this month, the U.S. issued a total of 313,138 student visas, which is typically the peak time for new university enrollments. China regained its status as the leading country of origin, with 86,647 visas granted to Chinese students — more than double the amount issued to Indian students. Although the issuance of visas to Chinese nationals also decreased, the reduction was significantly less severe than that experienced by India. These statistics emerge amidst Trump’s extensive immigration crackdown, which has targeted both students and universities — sectors that his administration perceives as politically liberal strongholds. In June, Secretary of State Marco Rubio temporarily suspended student visa processing while instructing U.S. embassies to scrutinize applicants’ social media. Since then, thousands of visas have been revoked, with officials citing “anti-Israel activity” or posts interpreted as opposing U.S. foreign policy. For Indian applicants, the situation has been exacerbated by new regulations mandating that students apply for visas solely within the jurisdiction of their home-country U.S. consulates, a rule that restricts flexibility and prolongs processing times amid increasing backlogs. This latest policy change signifies a notable shift in Washington’s stance towards India. Previous U.S. administrations had consistently advocated for closer educational and strategic relationships, viewing India as a crucial partner and counterbalance to China. However, Trump has expressed a desire to welcome more Chinese students as a gesture to enhance relations with Beijing.
