Many Indian software engineers and IT professionals have built successful careers in the United States over the years. They helped major technology companies grow and settled there with hopes of a better future. Due to high salaries and a comfortable lifestyle, many bought homes, moved with their families, and even raised children in America. However, the recent wave of layoffs by big companies such as Meta and Amazon has created fear among workers holding H-1B visas. For these employees, losing a job does not only mean losing income. It can also force them to leave the United States.
According to H-1B visa rules, workers who lose their jobs must find another employer within 60 days. If they fail to get a new job within that period, they may have to leave the country. In the current job market, finding another suitable job within two months has become very difficult for many IT professionals. Some workers try to change their visa status to a tourist visa so they can stay longer and continue searching for jobs. Still, uncertainty remains high among Indian tech workers living in the US. Reports say that more than one lakh IT employees in Silicon Valley alone have lost their jobs this year. The ongoing layoffs in major tech companies have increased stress and concern among thousands of H-1B visa holders and their families.
