The Central Government has approved five new digital forensic centres to strengthen the country’s digital forensic infrastructure and improve the investigation of electronic evidence. The move is aimed at delivering faster justice under the new criminal laws by expanding forensic facilities across India. As part of this initiative, the government has given permission for five new electronic evidence examination centres.
Among them, the Special Equipment Branch of the Border Security Force (BSF) will handle drone forensics and examine electronic evidence related to drones.
The forensic laboratories located in Mumbai, Goa, and Kolkata will analyze digital evidence obtained from computers and mobile devices. Meanwhile, the cyber division of the State Forensic Science Laboratory in Jaipur will examine computer-related electronic evidence. These laboratories have been officially notified as authorized electronic evidence examination centres under Section 79A of the Information Technology Act.
