A report has suggested that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited might have participated in the sale of imported equipment to a Russian arms supplier. According to the report, between 2023 and 2024, a company affiliated with the British aerospace manufacturer H.R. Smith Group provided equipment to an Indian firm, which is purportedly the largest trading partner of Russia’s arms agency, Rosoboronexport. The report further alleges that in February 2024, Techtest sold restricted technology to India, and shortly thereafter, Hindustan Aeronautics is said to have sold similar equipment to a buyer associated with Rosoboronexport. Nevertheless, the report acknowledges that there is no conclusive evidence proving that H.R. Smith’s products were ultimately sent to Russia; it only indicates that the Indian company received equipment from H.R. Smith and subsequently dispatched parts to Russia with matching product codes. Sources have dismissed these allegations as “factually incorrect and misleading,” contending that the report manipulates facts to support a political agenda.
They stress that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has consistently complied with international obligations concerning strategic trade controls. Additionally, they highlight India’s strong legal and regulatory framework governing strategic trade, which continues to oversee the international commercial activities of its companies. The sources also point out that India’s participation in three significant multilateral non-proliferation export control regimes underscores its dedication to adhering to global trade regulations. As discussions regarding international defense transactions continue, India’s strategic trade policies are under examination; however, officials maintain that all transactions are conducted in accordance with international standards and regulations.
