India is anticipated to reach unprecedented production levels for both rice and wheat by the end of June 2025, as reported by the farm ministry. The rice yield is expected to attain 149 million metric tons, an increase from last year’s 137.8 million tons, while wheat production is projected to reach 117.5 million tons—up from 113.3 million tons in 2024. As the largest rice exporter globally and the second-largest wheat producer after China, India is also set to enhance its rice exports due to the expected record harvest—reinforcing its position in the international food supply chain. These exceptional harvests are projected to elevate India’s total food grain production to a historic high of 354 million metric tons, significantly surpassing last year’s figure of 332.3 million tons. The ministry has credited the increase in wheat production to rising market prices, which have motivated farmers to expand their cultivation using high-yield seed varieties. This latest estimate also represents an upward revision from the ministry’s forecast of 115.4 million tons made in March. A robust wheat harvest is already rapidly replenishing domestic stocks, alleviating concerns regarding potential imports and countering previous speculation in global markets. With sufficient supplies, India is expected to fulfill its domestic wheat requirements entirely through local production this year, contributing to the stabilization of global wheat prices.
