In a landmark event celebrating India’s ambitious economic vision, the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation (GIDF), in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in Chicago, unveiled India@100: Envisioning Tomorrow’s Economic Powerhouse, a groundbreaking book by Dr. Krishnamurthy Subramanian, former Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India and current Executive Director for India at the IMF. The book outlines a compelling roadmap for India’s journey toward becoming a $55 trillion economy by 2047, marking 100 years of independence.
The event gathered esteemed leaders from academia, business, and government at the Consulate General, where Honorable Consul General Somnath Gosh opened the evening with an inspiring address. Linking the event to Dhanteras, a day associated with prosperity, Mr. Gosh noted the symbolic significance of discussing India’s economic future, reinforcing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047. “This vision aligns perfectly with India’s strengths and aspirations,” said Mr. Gosh, praising Dr. Subramanian’s work as a testament to India’s transformative potential.Dr. Subramanian’s keynote address provided an in-depth analysis of India’s growth opportunities, drawing historical parallels with Japan’s and China’s transformative growth trajectories. He posed, “If Japan grew 26 times between 1970 and 1995, and China by 22 times over the following 25 years, why not India?” His work identifies three core pillars essential for India’s economic acceleration: formalization of the economy, productivity enhancements, and a strong culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. “Big things never happen by thinking small,” he said, encouraging the audience to adopt a growth mindset.

The interactive session saw Dr. Subramanian addressing India’s manufacturing, energy policies, and potential for sustainable development. He emphasized manufacturing’s vital role in job creation and balancing trade while advocating for India’s right to shape its growth independently on its energy journey.
Rakesh Malhotra, President of the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation, concluded the evening with a stirring message on the power of belief and collective action, quoting Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” He affirmed GIDF’s commitment to advancing India’s growth through the diaspora’s contributions, spanning innovation, entrepreneurship, and strategic partnerships. “Together, we can make India a global economic powerhouse,” said Mr. Malhotra. The Global Indian Diaspora Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to Dr. Subramanian, Mr. Gosh, and the distinguished guests who contributed their insights and enthusiasm.
