A 54-year-old man of Indian origin, who allegedly fled to Mumbai after a fatal car accident on Long Island, New York, two decades ago, has been extradited back to the United States from India to face manslaughter charges, as reported by US officials. Two weeks following the incident in 2005, Ganesh Shenoy boarded a flight from New York and escaped to India. With the help of the US Marshals Service, the Department of Justice, and the US Embassy in India, he was returned from Mumbai on September 25, marking the first successful extradition from India since 2017. Ganesh Shenoy, who is accused of causing the death of a 44-year-old man in Hicksville on April 11, 2005, was arraigned on manslaughter charges on Friday and is currently being held without bail, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office (NCDA). Mastropolo, who worked as a maintenance engineer, was en route to work around 6 am when the accident occurred. Prosecutors claim that Ganesh Shenoy was driving a 1993 Volvo, speeding at nearly twice the legal limit. He allegedly ran a red light on Levittown Parkway and collided with Mastropolo’s Cadillac, leading to his immediate death, as per the report.
The force of the collision was so severe that Mastropolo’s vehicle was pushed 65 feet and crashed into a box truck that was waiting at the traffic signal. The damage was so extensive that his car was rendered completely unrecognizable. The accused was taken to a nearby hospital, but he refused medical treatment and left the facility. Shenoy was initially charged and ordered to surrender his Indian passport and driving license. However, just two weeks after the crash, on April 25, 2005, he boarded a flight from JFK Airport in New York and fled to Mumbai, successfully evading US authorities for over 20 years. A second-degree manslaughter charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years under New York law.
