Germany: Top Destination for Indian Students in higher education

Germany continues to be a leading choice for Indian students, who have become the largest group of international students in the country for the second year in a row. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) reports that the number of Indian students has more than doubled over the last five years, reaching a total of 49,483 for the Winter Semester 2023-2024. This represents a significant increase of 15.1% compared to the previous year. The growing interest of Indian students in Germany shows no signs of slowing down, with enrollments increasing consistently each year. A recent announcement from the DAAD’s regional office in New Delhi highlights that Indian students now make up the largest international community in Germany for the second consecutive year, with their numbers having more than doubled in the past five years.

Recent data from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office indicates that the number of Indian students has risen by 15.1% over the last year, totaling 49,483 for the Winter Semester 2023-2024. Among these students, 60% are pursuing engineering degrees, while 21% are studying law, management, and social sciences, and 13% are focused on mathematics and natural sciences.With the implementation of the new Act on March 1, 2024, the German government has made significant changes to the working regulations for international students from outside the European Union. It allows international students from outside the European Union to work up to 20 hours a week, which is an increase from the old limit of 10 hours. This change also applies to students who come to Germany to look for educational programs but have not yet enrolled in a university, as well as those taking German language courses.
