Pakistan has reportedly written to the United States requesting around $10 billion in financial support, equal to approximately ₹95,000 crore in Indian currency. The request is being described as one of the largest financial assistance demands made by Pakistan in its history. Pakistan is currently struggling to repay around $12.3 billion in loans borrowed from countries including China, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Facing serious financial pressure, Pakistan has now sought help from the United States, reportedly using its role in diplomatic efforts related to the conflict between the US and Iran as a basis for the request. If approved, the financial support could provide major relief to Pakistan’s struggling economy. Pakistani officials reportedly believe that the United States may consider the request positively because of Pakistan’s involvement in diplomatic discussions aimed at reducing tensions related to the Iran conflict.
According to a US official, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb submitted the request in a letter during a meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Pakistan has reportedly asked for a $10 billion bilateral financial stabilization support facility between the two governments, with a maturity period of up to five years. Diplomatic sources suggest that the request could receive consideration as the administration of US President Donald Trump has been maintaining closer relations with Pakistan. The proposed financial assistance could therefore become an important lifeline for Pakistan as it continues to face severe economic and debt-related challenges.
