Japan experiences frequent earthquakes due to its geographical position along the “Ring of Fire,” a region characterized by a series of volcanoes and tectonic fault lines in the Pacific Basin. On Monday, the country’s Meteorological Agency reported a significant earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 that struck southwestern Japan. Tsunami warnings were promptly issued for Miyazaki Prefecture, the epicenter of the quake, located on the southwestern island of Kyushu, as well as for the adjacent Kochi Prefecture, shortly after the tremor occurred at 9:19 p.m. local time. The full extent of the damage caused by this seismic event remains unclear at this time.
