Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) received the Champion of Freedom Award on November 19 during the Toast to Freedom event, organized by the Free Jimmy Lai Campaign. This event honors individuals who have demonstrated steadfast commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and press freedom, celebrating those who advocate for the liberation of innocent individuals unjustly detained by oppressive governments.
In his acceptance speech, Krishnamoorthi conveyed his appreciation to the Free Jimmy Lai Campaign, underscoring the critical need to champion freedom and democracy both in Hong Kong and worldwide. He remarked, “As we witness the continuation of Jimmy Lai’s unjust trial in Hong Kong today, we are reminded of the urgency not only to secure Lai’s immediate and unconditional release but also to uphold the principles of freedom and democracy in Hong Kong and globally.” He expressed his determination to remain a strong proponent of the rule of law, press freedom, and human rights on an international scale.
Krishnamoorthi has consistently criticized human rights violations in China, particularly concerning the alleged forced labor practices affecting the Uyghur population. On November 20, the Department of Homeland Security expanded the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Entity List by adding 29 new entities, raising the total to 107. Krishnamoorthi deemed this addition a crucial advancement in the battle against forced labor and human rights abuses in China.
