Savitha Shanmuga Sundaram, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Texas at Austin, was identified as one of the three victims killed in a mass shooting in Austin’s popular 6th Street entertainment district. The incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden. In the tragic attack, three people lost their lives and 14 others were injured before police shot and killed the suspect at the scene. Savitha Shanmuga Sundaram was a dual-degree honours student in Management Information Systems and Economics at UT Austin’s McCombs School of Business. She was known for her academic excellence and active involvement on campus, serving on the executive board of the Indian Students Association. University officials said she had recently secured a position at a major professional services firm after interning at PwC. Authorities identified the suspect as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalised U.S. citizen originally from Senegal. The FBI is investigating a possible terrorism link. The tragedy has deeply affected the UT Austin community, with students and faculty mourning the loss of a bright and promising young life.
