On the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland released a statement reflecting on the violent events that interrupted the certification of the presidential election results. He remarked, “Four years ago today, police officers faced brutal assaults while courageously protecting the United States Capitol.” Garland emphasized the severe physical injuries sustained by officers who were subjected to punches, tackles, tasers, and chemical agents, while also honoring the memory of the five officers who tragically lost their lives as a result of that day’s chaos.

Garland characterized January 6 as a violent assault on both law enforcement and the fundamental principle of a peaceful transfer of power, which is essential to American democracy. He recognized the lasting effects on the officers who endured the attack and the families of those who perished. Over the past four years, the Justice Department has undertaken one of its most extensive and resource-heavy investigations. Garland pointed out that prosecutors, FBI agents, and investigators have meticulously examined vast quantities of physical and digital evidence, leading to the identification and arrest of hundreds of individuals involved in the incident. To date, more than 1,500 individuals have faced charges related to the events of January 6 and the circumstances surrounding it. “The public servants of the Justice Department have worked tirelessly to ensure accountability for those criminally responsible for the January 6 attack on our democracy, demonstrating unwavering integrity,” Garland stated, expressing his pride and appreciation for the department’s efforts.
