The Government of India has launched the e-Passport service, enabling applicants from different regions of the country to choose this enhanced travel document. This initiative is a significant aspect of the larger digital program referred to as Passport Seva Program (PSP) 2.0. As stated by the Ministry of External Affairs, the rollout of ePassports commenced as a pilot project on April 1, 2024. An e-Passport represents a contemporary travel document that integrates both physical and digital features. It is equipped with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and a built-in antenna. This chip securely retains the personal information and biometric data of the passport holder. A unique gold-colored emblem printed beneath the front cover distinguishes the ePassport from traditional passports. In alignment with the extensive digital transformation initiative known as Passport Seva Programme (PSP) 2.0, Regional Passport Offices in cities such as Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat, and Ranchi currently possess the required infrastructure to issue these advanced e-passports.

Highlighted Advantages of India’s e-Passport:

  • Enhanced security of personal data via embedded encrypted biometrics.
  • Accelerates immigration processes and eases access through automated e-gates.
  • Complies with international travel standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
