The Supreme Court orders the Election Commission to publish details of 6.5 million deleted voters in Bihar

The Supreme Court has ordered the Election Commission to publish the details of 6.5 million voters that were removed in Bihar. The Bihar state assembly elections are set to take place soon. In this context, the Election Commission of India is undertaking a special intensive revision of the voter list in the state. In the voter draft list released on the first of the month, the names of 6.52 million voters had been removed. Following this, the Election Commission filed an affidavit in response to various organizations and political party leaders who had filed a case against the aforementioned actions of the Election Commission in the Supreme Court.

The Election Commission has stated that it cannot release the list containing the details of the 6.5 million voters removed in Bihar, and that no one has the right to request this information. Meanwhile, the aforementioned case has come up for hearing today. At that time, the Supreme Court ordered the Election Commission to publish the details of the 6.5 million voters removed in Bihar on the internet. Furthermore, it is required to disclose how many individuals have been removed on a district-wise basis, along with their identities. The list must be released citing reasons such as deceased individuals and voters who have migrated. The Supreme Court has indicated that the reasons for the removal should be communicated in a manner that can be understood on the website. Additionally, the Supreme Court has instructed the Election Commission to recognize the evidence as documentation.
