The United States is considering a new bill that could sharply increase import taxes on goods from countries that buy crude oil from Russia. According to Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, former US President Donald Trump has expressed support for the proposal. If passed, the bill would allow the US to impose up to a 500% tariff on exports to America from countries such as India, China, and Brazil that continue to purchase Russian oil. The move is linked to the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, which has continued for nearly four years despite earlier claims by Trump that he could end the conflict quickly if elected. Senators Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal jointly drafted the bill, arguing that stronger economic pressure is needed because Russian President Vladimir Putin continues military actions. If the US Congress approves the bill and it becomes law, countries buying Russian oil could face heavy trade penalties, potentially affecting global trade and increasing economic pressure on major emerging economies.
