Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said that closer cooperation between India and Europe could bring significant changes in global politics and economics. Speaking after attending the Weimar Triangle Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Paris, Jaishankar highlighted India’s growing engagement with European nations such as France, Germany, and Poland, which formed the Weimar Triangle in 1991 to strengthen security and economic cooperation. This was the first time an Indian minister participated in the meeting alongside representatives from European countries. Jaishankar noted that India and Europe are in advanced talks for a free trade agreement, and both sides are exploring collaboration in key areas like technology, semiconductors, railways, defense, and aviation. He added that strong India-Europe ties are especially important amid global tensions, including the Ukraine conflict, disputes in the South China Sea, Taiwan, and Greenland issues involving Europe, Russia, China, and the US. Looking ahead, several European leaders, including German Chancellor Frederick Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron, are scheduled to visit India soon. As part of these strengthening ties, the Republic Day celebrations in Delhi on January 26 will host European Union President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council leader Antonio Costa as special guests, marking another milestone in India-Europe relations.
