This visit occurs against the backdrop of recently completed daylong talks between US Chief Negotiator Brendan Lynch and his Indian counterpart Rajesh Agrawal regarding the proposed bilateral trade agreement. On September 16, the commerce ministry announced that the daylong discussions with the visiting US delegation concerning a bilateral trade deal were constructive, and both parties agreed to strive for an early and mutually advantageous conclusion of the agreement. “It was resolved to enhance efforts to achieve an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial trade agreement,” the ministry stated following a seven-hour meeting with US officials. The discussions were significant as the US has enacted a substantial 50% tariff on Indian products. This visit by high-ranking US trade officials marks the first since the implementation of a 25% tariff and an additional 25% penalty on Indian goods entering the American market for the purchase of Russian crude oil. In February, leaders from both nations instructed their officials to negotiate a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement. The goal was to finalize the initial phase of the pact by the fall (October-November) of 2025. To date, five rounds of negotiations have taken place. The agreement aims to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, up from the current $191 billion.
