Chinese President Xi Jinping warned U.S. President Donald Trump that if the Taiwan issue is not handled carefully, it could lead to conflicts and serious tensions between China and the United States, putting the overall relationship between the two countries at great risk. Donald Trump arrived in China yesterday for a three-day official visit and received a warm welcome at Beijing International Airport, where Chinese Vice President Han Zheng greeted him. During today’s meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping, the two leaders discussed several important issues, especially peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, Xi Jinping said that maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait is one of the most important shared responsibilities between China and the United States. He explained that the Taiwan issue is the most sensitive and important matter in China-U.S. relations and said that if it is managed properly, relations between the two countries can remain stable and positive.

However, if handled poorly, it could create conflicts, confrontations, and major damage to bilateral ties. Xi Jinping also stressed that Taiwan independence and peace in the Taiwan Strait cannot exist together. Speaking about economic ties, Xi said that China-U.S. trade relations are mutually beneficial and can create success for both countries. He added that the positive and balanced outcomes achieved during recent trade discussions between business groups from both nations are good news not only for the people of China and the United States but also for the world. Xi Jinping further said that history has repeatedly shown that no one wins in trade wars and that equal consultation and dialogue are the best ways to solve disagreements and tensions. He also urged both sides to protect and continue the positive momentum and good relationship that both countries have worked hard to build over the years.
