Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly been invited to attend the funeral ceremonies of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to reports, Khamenei, aged 86, was killed on the first day of air strikes launched by the United States and Israel on Tehran on February 28. Under Islamic traditions, the deceased are usually buried as soon as possible. However, exceptions can be made during times of war.
The funeral ceremonies for Khamenei are scheduled to begin in Tehran on July 4. His body will be buried on July 9 in his hometown of Mashhad, a holy city in northeastern Iran, marking the conclusion of the funeral events.
Additional ceremonies will also take place on July 7 in Qom, another important religious city located south of Tehran. Around 20 million people are expected to participate in the funeral events.
Several foreign leaders, including Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, are expected to attend. Government sources have stated that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has extended an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in the funeral ceremonies.
