A US court has ordered Meta to provide $567 million to address the harmful effects that Facebook and Instagram have allegedly caused among young people. A case was filed against Meta in a New Mexico court, accusing its platforms of affecting children’s mental health and failing to properly address allegations of sexual exploitation involving children.Meta lost the case, and in the first phase of the ruling, the court had imposed a $375 million penalty on the company. In the latest order, the court directed Meta to provide an additional $567 million to help address the impact of its platforms on young people.Judge Bree Biescheidt said that most of the amount, around $420 million, will be used to provide treatment and support services for young people. The remaining amount will be spent on awareness and prevention programs, testing services, and other related expenses over the next five years.
